Virginia A. Groot Craft Futures Residency

A cohort of Western North Carolina-based craft artists will receive a $10,000 honorarium for a 6-month residency to rebuild their practice after Hurricane Helene.

In 2025, the Virginia A. Groot Residency at the Center for Craft will support craft artists in Western North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene. This 6-month program will focus on recipients rebuilding and recentering their practice and providing mutual aid and community support for each other and the broader regional craft community.

Each resident artist will receive a $10,000 honorarium, Center for Craft flex-desk coworking membership, join the WNC Craft Futures Cohort, and be featured in a group exhibit in the Center’s Bresler Family Gallery. Four on-site residents will receive approximately 200 sq ft of free studio space in the Center's Ideation Lab. Artists who lost their studio space during Helene will be given priority for the four free, on-site studio spaces.

Four artists will receive approximately 200 sq ft of free studio space in the Center's Ideation Lab. Three previous recipients of the Virgina A. Groot Foundation will be invited to participate in the cohort and complete the residency at their home studios.

ELIGIBILITY 

Applicants must be:

  • 21 years of age or older
  • Eligible to receive taxable income in the U.S.
  • Be a resident of Western North Carolina (counties include: Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey and including the Qualla Boundary) for at least 2 years and during the duration of the residency.
  • Primarily a visual artist working in craft.

Applicants can not be:

  • A full-time student in a degree-granting program or its equivalent
  • Anyone with a conflict of interest with the Center for Craft, including substantial contributors, current employees, consultants, or board members of the Center for Craft, or immediate family members of such a person.
  • Previous Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration or WNC Center for Craft artist in residence.
  • Current recipient of any Center for Craft grant or fellowship.
  • Primarily literary, performing, or other non-visual artists. 

GRANT DETAILS

Center for Craft Responsibilities

  • Provide resident lodging during the residency period
  • Provide resident workspace and a Cowork pass in the Center for Craft's National Craft Innovation Hub
  • Facilitate resident artist participation in material-based exploration one local educational craft space
  • Facilitate up to 3 days of regional exploration, including studio, gallery, and archive visits, among other experiences.
  • Plan an exhibition in the Bresler Family Gallery to include a public reception.
  • Supply an honorarium of $10,000
  • The initial 70% of the grant will be awarded upon the return of the signed contract.
  • The final 30% will be awarded upon receipt of a final interview and grant report.
  • Reimburse parking or bus fare needed to get to and from the Center for Craft during the residency period (up to $250)

Resident Responsibilities

  • Artistic Development; commit to spend at least 20 hours a week in the studio space located at the Center for Craft in downtown Asheville
  • Material Exploration - Resident will work collaboratively with one craft studio in the region in a material outside primary training
  • Regional Exploration - participate in up to 3 full days of regional exploration, including studio, gallery, and archive visits, among other experiences
  • Recipient must acknowledge support from the Center for Craft during residency period by including the line: “Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration Resident at the Center for Craft” in their email signature, website, and/or social media page for the duration of the residency period
  • Ensure the availability of between two and ten works of art for the Center for Craft to display in the Bresler Family Gallery located at the Center for Craft in downtown Asheville, North Carolina form April-August 2025 (dates TBD) the duration of the residency period. A separate loan agreement will be issued once the artwork is mutually agreed upon
  • Residents will participate in a public program or engagement opportunity with the other three artists in residence, produced by the Center for Craft
  • At the end of the Residency Period, Resident Artist will complete program evaluation in a timely manner.

REVIEW PROCESS

A panel of reviewers, who are recognized craft artists, scholars, and /or curators, free of any conflict of interest, will evaluate the applications. The 8 applicants with the highest cumulative scores will then be reviewed by the Center for Craft staff who will select four applicants to interview and check references before determining who will receive the two Residency opportunities.  

Selection Panel

The three-person panel will be selected based on the following:

  • Diversity: representing a range of expertise, craft experiences, race, ethnicity, gender,  sexual orientation, and geographic location.
  • At least one panelist who identifies as an artist, maker, and/or craftsperson. 
  • At least one panelist who is invested in the craft ecosystem of Western North Carolina.
  • Capacity to review a volume of applications and take part in the adjudication process. 

All applications will be reviewed based on the following criteria.

  • Artistic merit and originality
  • Timeliness -  in terms of both the artist's career trajectory and contemporary relevance.
  • Need - demonstrated need for the time, space, and resources to grow their career.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and investment in craft practices

Final Consideration: 

In addition to the criteria listed above, the interview and final selection will consider each applicant's willingness to work in a shared setting with a diverse cohort and participate in public engagement events. Ultimately, we will compose a group of recipients deserving of further recognition while prioritizing diversity, representing a range of materials, perspectives, and communities of practice.

HOW TO APPLY 

The Center for Craft welcomes all craft artists based in Western North Carolina to apply. Applicants must apply using the online application program SlideRoom at http://www.centerforcraft.slideroom.com.

All applicants should create a login to complete the application. Before submitting your application, you will be directed to a confirmation page where you can review your materials and return to edit or delete your uploaded files as needed. Once you submit your application, you cannot access your form again. Applicants will receive a confirmation email once the application form has been successfully submitted.  

There is a $10 application fee. Applicants may request for the fee to be waived by sending an email to grants@centerforcraft.org with the text, “Please waive the application fee for my Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration WNC Residency application.” No additional information is required. To waive your fee, you must first create your SlideRoom portal and access the application through SlideRoom before requesting to waive the fee. Application fees cannot be waived after applications are submitted.

FAQs 

I just moved to Western North Carolina, can I apply for the residency?

No, all applicants must be a resident of Western North Carolina for at least 2 years and during the duration of the residency. Western North Carolina counties include: Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey, also including the Qualla Boundary.

May I mail a hard copy of my application materials to the Center for Craft’s office?

No, hard copy submissions will not be accepted. The application must be completed and submitted through SlideRoom.  

Can I work on my application and return to complete it at a later date?  

Yes, creating a login account will enable you to complete the form in several online sessions.  

I just submitted my application but I want to return to it and make an edit. Is this possible? 

No, once your application is submitted, you will not be able to return to the form or change any submitted information. The application fee must also be paid at the time of submitting your application as you will not be able to log-in again to access the payment page again.  

I can not afford the $10 application fee, may I have it waived?
