This project is to research the young life at sea and studio Practice of James Forten: A Free Black Male, a master sailmaker. Born to Free Black Parents in 1766 – 1842, in Philadelphia, Pa. As a 14-year-old, he was employed, and a prisoner of war on tall sail ships. He applied his life at sea experience to later advance his craftsmanship as a master sail maker in the shipping ports of Philadelphia.
