Carolyn Hazel Drake is an artist and arts educator based in Portland, OR, and Phoenix, AZ. Her creative identity and fine motor skills were shaped from an early age at her mother’s quilt store. She studied English Literature & Architecture at Portland State University’s Honors College and spent a term as a curatorial research & writing intern for the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She has an M.Ed. in Art Education and spent a decade as a high school art teacher before moving into K-12 arts administration in Oregon school districts. She served on the Portland Art Museum’s Teacher Advisory Council for 7 years, and in 2019 was awarded the Distinguished Service to Arts Education by OAEA. She has been awarded several residencies, including the GLEAN residency and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology residency. Her work has been shown across the Pacific Northwest, and she is currently a member of artist-run gallery Carnation Contemporary. In 2022, Drake joined the faculty at Arizona State University as an assistant teaching professor for art education in the School of Art.

Gallery Hours: Closed — Reopening Fall 2019
The Center for Craft is providing emergency relief in response to Hurricane Helene, directing critical resources to the artists of Western North Carolina. Donate now to join us in this effort. The first round of relief funding for $500 grants to artists is now closed. Please check back for details on the second round of recovery funding that will launch soon.
The Center for Craft galleries are now open on a modified schedule Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. Cowork at Center for Craft is open regular hours for registered Coworkers and 10 am - 4 pm for guests or day passes, offering reliable wifi, access to coffee, and community—free to makers in the region who were impacted.
