Craft Research Fund—Exhibition Grant
2019
Resident Artists from The Clay Studio were invited to visit storage with seven curators at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This project allowed unprecedented access for these artists to the Philadelphia Museum of Art collections and to the curators themselves. The 14 artists researched the collections online and chose several potential inspiration objects. They visited storage in September 2018 and again in January 2019 to examine objects, talk to the curators, and make a final choice. During the spring of 2019, the artists went to work in their studios creating response artworks. In May 2019 there were two discussion sessions with the artists and curators to review the process and talk about how each person responded to the project. As the artists finished their works, they also wrote essays about the experience. Three of the curators wrote essays describing the project and making connections to larger issues in the fields of craft, museums, and connecting historical and contemporary art. The exhibition was on view from September 14 – November 17, 2019, and included a panel discussion during the American Craft Council’s conference in Philadelphia recorded by ArtBlog Radio.
